Curriculum

The SCI Medicine Fellowship will include clinical experiences in the initial acute care management, acute rehabilitation, and outpatient management of persons with SCI. During the various clinical rotations, the fellow will have the opportunity to work with six SCIM-certified attending physicians in addition to specialists in trauma, spine surgery, pulmonary, critical care, pediatrics, plastic surgery, urology, and neurology.

Clinical experiences will be integrated with other clinical disciplines such as biomedical and mechanical engineering, physical and occupational therapy, speech and language pathology, recreation and music therapy, vocational therapy, respiratory therapy and psychology.

Core Rotations

MetroHealth Medical Center (4 months)

• Acute inpatient rehabilitation
• Acute consult service

VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare System (3 months)

• Acute inpatient rehabilitation
• Chronic inpatient medical care
• Inpatient/Outpatient/Telehealth for ALS/MS clinic

Cleveland Clinic Foundation (3 months)

• Mellen Center: Spasticity Management
• Neurosurgery department
• Urology department

Elective Time

• Equivalent of 2 months per year
• Specialty clinics/rotations and/or research time
  • Including tendon and nerve transfer clinics, seating clinic, wound care plastic surgery clinic, spina bifida clinic, neurocritical care rotation, ultrasound, EMG clinics, and more

Continuity Clinic

• 2 half-days per week at VAMC and MetroHealth
