The SCI Medicine Fellowship will include clinical experiences in the initial acute care management, acute rehabilitation, and outpatient management of persons with SCI. During the various clinical rotations, the fellow will have the opportunity to work with eight SCIM-certified attending physicians in addition to specialists in trauma, spine surgery, pulmonary, critical care, pediatrics, plastic surgery, urology, and neurology.
Clinical experiences will be integrated with other clinical disciplines such as biomedical and mechanical engineering, physical and occupational therapy, speech and language pathology, recreation and music therapy, vocational therapy, respiratory therapy and psychology.
Core Rotations
MetroHealth Inpatient (3 months)
- Acute inpatient rehabilitation
- Acute care consult service
MetroHealth Outpatient/Elective (3 months)
- Outpatient Specialty Clinic customized to fellow including SCI Preventative care, wound care, osteoporosis, seating and assistive technology, tendon/nerve transfer, driver training, MSK procedures, spasticity management
- 1 month Elective time (away rotation approved)
- Acute care consult service
VAMC Inpatient (3 months)
- Acute inpatient rehabilitation and chronic medical care
- Outpatient SCI and ALS/MS clinics
- Homecare service
Cleveland Clinic Foundation (3 months)
- Dedicated months in Spasticity Management, Neurosurgery department, Urology department
- Additional exposure in Fertility/Sexuality, Pediatrics, Multiple Sclerosis
Elective Time
- 1 month per year
- Can be used for research time (up to 70%)
- Can be used as away-rotation
Protected Times
- Continuity clinic: Monday mornings at MetroHealth
- VA Clinic: Tuesday all day clinic during MetroHealth Outpatient and VA Inpatient months (6 months total)
- Academic Time: Thursday mornings at MetroHealth for research, didactics, quality improvement and other activities
