Mission and Vision

The Med-Peds residency training program at MetroHealth exists to develop primary care and subspecialty physician leaders who unite with underserved patients and communities throughout Greater Cleveland. The program integrates compassionate patient care with advocacy, partnership, teaching and scholarship.

The program trains residents in unique aspects of population health through exposure to resources that address the patient’s social determinants of health. We emphasize emotional intelligence through reflection, personal understanding, self-actualization, cultural competency, and interpersonal communication etiquette.

In addition to strong patient care skills, our program supports service-learning through community outreach and relationship building with underserved patients and communities. This fosters a climate of shared learning experiences and uniquely positions our residents to advocate for the well-being of all whom we serve.

Support for residents who work for justice in communities

The MetroHealth System and the department of internal medicine-pediatrics lead with our mission and values. The department is committed to ensuring a diverse, equitable and inclusive residency environment as regards to race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, medical condition, age, genetic information, pregnancy, veteran or military status or other legally protected characteristic. We welcome and encourage residents and faculty to address concerns and maintain an open and affirming leadership structure.

Faculty and residents are encouraged to speak out against injustice and express their views respectfully both in and out of the workplace without fear of retaliation. The department supports persons working for positive change in our communities including organizing and being actively engaged in open discussions via social media, non-violent protests and other forums. Faculty and residents who engage in assembly must do so outside of scheduled shifts and as private citizens unaffiliated with MetroHealth or the med-peds residency program.

The department is proud to support all persons who work toward a greater humanism where all persons are seen, heard and valued. The leadership team trusts residents to do what is right by creating a world where all persons are treated with dignity and respect. The residency program encourages residents to volunteer in disadvantaged communities, vote in elections, and build societies with greater understanding and empathy to promote all in our communities to reach their maximum potential.
