Curriculum

The Brain Injury Medicine fellowship will include clinical experiences in the initial acute care management, neurocritical care, acute rehabilitation and outpatient management of persons with brain injuries and concussions.

During the various clinical rotations, the fellow will have the opportunity to work with four BIM-certified attending physicians in addition to specialists in neurology, neurocritical care, neurosurgery, neuropsychology, psychiatry, and trauma surgery.

Clinical experiences will be integrated with other clinical disciplines such as rehabilitation psychology, physical and occupational therapy, speech and language pathology, recreation and music therapy, vocational therapy, nutrition and respiratory therapy.

Several unique features of this fellowship include:

  • Innovative applications of assistive technology through integration with the Departments of Biomedical and Mechanical Engineering at CWRU including functional electrical stimulation and virtual reality.
  • Continuity clinic at MetroHealth including concussion and severe brain injury outpatient management of children and adults
  • Continuity clinic at the VA including management of military brain injuries and concussions
  • Exposure to deep brain stimulation program at Cleveland Clinic
  • Comprehensive assessment and management of headaches including oral medications, neurotoxin and steroid injections
  • Comprehensive assessment and management of spasticity using oral medications, electrical stimulation, neurotoxin injections, and intrathecal baclofen pumps
  • Comprehensive assessment and management of brain injury complications including vestibular dysfunction and movement disorders
  • Teaching activities will include medical students from CWRU and residents at each clinical site
