Curriculum

The fellow participates in a busy clinical service within the Division of Oral Medicine, including the outpatient clinic at the Ohio City MetroHealth Family Dentistry, the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery service, and multiple specialty floors at the main hospital campus. This program is tailored to the fellow’s experience level and is appropriate for general dentists seeking to enter the specialty field, or for established specialists in any of the Oral Diagnostic areas who seek additional exposure to the management of oral mucosal disorders, clinical oral pathology, orofacial pain and headache medicine, and dental sleep medicine.

The fellow practices independently under the guidance of faculty board certified in oral medicine, orofacial pain, dental sleep medicine, oral and maxillofacial radiology, and oral and maxillofacial surgery. General and emergent clinical dental care is also provided to patients with multiple medical comorbidities at an outpatient basis, with the opportunity to participate in sedation cases and operating room cases with the established general practice, pediatric, or oral surgery training programs. Program faculty are experienced clinicians with more than two decades of experience in hospital care and education. The clinical component of the program is of approximately 80% effort, with the remaining time dedicated to the fellow’s research interests and elective experiences.

The service counts with the latest technology, including CBCT imaging, intraoral scans, 3-D printing, CAD-CAM, vital tissue reflectance, and soft tissue and hard tissue lasers. The fellow will have the opportunity to train in the use of these practice adjuvants.

An in-house floor consult service is under development and the fellow will have the opportunity to be a key participant in the consolidation of consultations in oncology, rheumatology, pediatrics, and other services. This program is not accredited by CODA.
