Curriculum

The MetroHealth Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program lasts for one year. The curriculum is designed to provide well-rounded exposure to all aspects of hospice and palliative care. At the end of this program, you will have the clinical expertise and research experience you'll need in order to care for patients in your community.

Curriculum Breakdown

The curriculum is split into "blocks," with each block lasting approximately 4 weeks. Students will participate in blocks concerning:

  • Dedicated hospice care, in both inpatient and outpatient settings
  • Palliative care consultation
  • Geriatrics and long-term care
  • Longitudinal outpatient care
  • Oncology, including outpatient care, inpatient consults and radiation oncology
  • Pediatric palliative care

Fellows can also choose from the following list of electives, such as:

  • Critical care
  • Interventional pain
  • Pastoral care
  • Self-directed learning

We also offer weekly didactic conferences, which are designed to enhance the research and clinical expertise of our fellows. Here, students have an opportunity to learn from our talented teaching staff about the issues that impact hospice and palliative care today, as well as the topics that are evolving in the future.

As part of our didactic sessions, we have robust prognostication and communication curriculums. We also have a journal club, in which fellows examine and dissect the research done by leaders in the HPM field. Lastly, all of our fellows participate in quality improvement programs, as we are continually striving to improve the ways we care for our patients and their families.
