Activities

  • NICU Service Fellow: Four months (two months at MHMC and two months at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital)
  • Pediatric Cardiology/Cardiothoracic Surgery Rotation: Two weeks block at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital (Required)
  • Research/area of special focus: Six months
  • Follow-up clinic weekly: two fellows scheduled each week by rotation when not on NICU service; a two-week rotation in NICHD Neonatal Network Research Clinic at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital which includes participation in and gain knowledge on Bayley Scales of Infant Development.
  • Average on call frequency: 1/6 nights for the entire year (varies by service month versus non-service month) at MetroHealth NICU
  • Vacation: 4 weeks

Educational Objectives

1. Clinical Knowledge

  • Proficient in the management of the common problems specified in the first-year clinical knowledge section
  • Describe clinical symptoms and management alternatives for the more common problems seen in high-risk, pregnant women
  • Continue sustained and expanded two-year review of Fetal and Neonatal Physiology (Read Polin and Fox) started in first year
  • Initiate a two-year reading program with one of the major textbooks of Neonatology
  • Complete a two-week Rotation on the Pediatric Cardiology/Cardiothoracic Surgery Service at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital

2. Procedures

  • Mastery of the procedures listed in the first-year procedure section above
  • Proficiency with non-conventional ventilators, nitric oxide
  • Attend an ECMO seminar
  • Regional Trainer for NRP
  • Teaching Skills & Presentations 
  • Teaches well during Work Rounds
  • Can give resident level talks on many common topics in Neonatology
  • Excellent OB/PEDS presentations
  • Billing & Coding
  • Hospital and Personal Finance

3. Research Project

  • Major project initiated (collecting data)

  • Background and project progress seminar given to Neonatology Division

4. Patient safety and Quality
