The MetroHealth Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship is a comprehensive, one-year training program designed to provide fellows with a well-rounded and immersive experience across the full spectrum of hospice and palliative care. By the end of the program, fellows will develop the clinical expertise, communication skills, and scholarly foundation necessary to deliver high-quality, compassionate care to patients and families in a variety of settings.

Curriculum Structure

The curriculum is organized into four-week "blocks," allowing fellows to gain focused, in-depth exposure to key areas of hospice and palliative medicine.   Core rotations include, but are not limited to:

  • Palliative Care Consultation – conducted at an academic medical center including pediatric inpatient consultations
  • Hospice Care – Experience in both inpatient and outpatient hospice settings
  • Geriatrics and Long-Term Care – Care of older adults with complex medical needs
  • Longitudinal Outpatient Palliative Care – Continuity clinic experience

Fellows can also choose from the following list of electives, such as:

  • Interventional pain
  • Pastoral care
  • Self-directed learning
  • Oncology, including outpatient care, inpatient consults, and radiation oncology
  • Hospice Medical Directorship

Here, students have an opportunity to learn from our talented teaching staff about the issues that impact hospice and palliative care today, as well as the topics that are evolving in the future.

All of our fellows participate in quality improvement programs, as we are continually striving to improve the ways we care for our patients and their families.
