Program Benefits

  • Program Director Dialogue: held quarterly off-site at a restaurant. It is chaired by the chief residents and is an opportunity to talk about program concerns and spend time with co-residents. Not mandatory. 

Allowances

  • Textbook/ Conference allowance $2500
  • Additional conference support when presenting an accepted abstract: $1000 for conference costs and registration is covered

Call Schedule

  • Call is taken in PGY2 and 3 years
    • 4-5 calls a month in PGY2, on 2 weekends a month
    • 1-2 calls a month in PGY3, on 0-1 weekends a month
  • 28 hour in-house call
    • Manageable on-call shifts where residents usually sleep very well 
    • Post-call days are protected time off
    • Pro-tip: you can be post-call prior to vacation to add on to the available time

Food

  • Breakfast and Lunch supplied for Thursday Lecture
  • On-call meal allowance at MetroHealth Cafeteria for PGY2 and PGY3
  • Program reimbursements for a meal during weekend on-call shift

Healthcare

  • Subsidized healthcare plans available
  • Vision and dental plan available at a reasonable cost
  • FMLA benefits after working at MetroHealth for one year

Miscellaneous

  • Parking is $2.50 per day
  • HOA (house officers association): The House Staff Association is made up of the resident and fellows of MetroHealth Medical Center. Activities of the association include social hours, community service projects, hospital projects and many activities throughout the year. Residents are asked to consent to a $7.00 per bi-weekly pay deduction to cover house staff dues.

Yearly

  • 27 Vacation days, including Christmas, New Year, Thanksgiving, July 4th, Memorial Day and Labor Day and Juneteenth
    • Weekends can often be incorporated into vacation without use of vacation days, so 5 days = 9 days!
    • Ability to use vacation days for terminal leave in PGY4
  • 5 Conference days
  • 5 Interview days
  • Up to 15 sick days (accrued on a bi-weekly basis)
