Medical Student Guide
Welcome to MetroHealth Medical Center! We are here to make student elective rotations an enjoyable and educational experience for each and every student, as well as provide valuable resources and guidance. This guide contains general information that will be covered in detail during orientation.
When and Where to Report on Your First Day
All medical students should report to the Graduate Medical Education Office, A-107, by 7:45 a.m. on the first day of their elective unless directed otherwise. Room A-107 is located on the main floor of the Towers entrance, and is situated in the courtyard hallway near the Gift Shop. Students will be given a brief orientation to the hospital, receive their hospital identification badge and be directed to their department.
Absence During Rotation
Due to the limited duration of any rotation, attendance is mandatory. Should an emergency arise, it is a departmental decision whether or not it is excused. Excess absence during interview season will not be excused. Absences will be reflected in the student's grade.
Academic Programs Available
Each week, many departments offer numerous lectures and courses that students may attend. Schedules are available in each department and on the MetroHealth intranet. As long as the lecture does not interfere with student duties, students are welcome to attend any program of interest.
It is expected that medical students will complete the elective that they have scheduled. We realize that things may happen and students may need to cancel their elective, but please let us know at least six (6) weeks in advance, in writing, either via e-mail or postal mail, stating that the elective will not be completed. Application fees are non-refundable.
We will begin to accept applications for the upcoming academic year on August 10 (date changed due to COVID-19). Please note that our elective rotations are open first to our affiliated Case Western Reserve University Medical School students. Visiting student applications will be considered after August 10, on a first-come, first-served basis.
Bus Routes to MetroHealth Medical Center
MetroHealth Medical Center is served by multiple bus routes. For further information on bus routes, visit the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority or call at 216-621-9500.
Directions to MetroHealth Medical Center
MetroHealth Medical Center is located at 2500 MetroHealth Drive, Cleveland, Ohio 44109-1998, which is on the west side of the city of Cleveland, less than a 10-minute drive from downtown Cleveland.
Students are expected to dress appropriately. Men should wear ties. Women should dress in business appropriate attire. Open-toed shoes, jeans and other inappropriate clothing are not permitted. Students must bring a lab coat. White coats or department specific uniforms are to be worn at all times. Students should refer to the hospital dress code policy if there are questions.
Scrubs are provided by the respective department when needed. Should you need scrubs, and they are not available in the department, they can be obtained from Textile Services. A white coat must be worn over scrubs anytime you leave a procedural area. Scrubs are NOT to be worn in, to or out of the hospital. Students are expected to return all scrubs at the end of the rotation.
Electronic Medical Records
MetroHealth utilizes EPIC for our electronic medical record.
All students are required to complete the MetroHealth Medical Center HIPAA Training. This is necessary even if they have received training at their school. MetroHealth Medical Center has specific policies and procedures unique to the hospital. Students will not be allowed to participate in patient care or their elective until they have completed this training.

Following orientation, students will be directed to obtain their MetroHealth ID badge. Students must wear their ID badge at all times while at any of the MetroHealth locations. Students will need to return their badge to the Graduate Medical Education Office, Room A-107, at the end of their rotations. If they do not return their hospital ID on the last day of their rotation, a student's school evaluation will be delayed until the ID is returned.
MetroHealth Medical Center does not provide malpractice insurance to medical students. Students need to provide a copy of their malpractice insurance policy with their application. Most schools provide students with this insurance. If a student's school does not provide malpractice coverage while on an elective rotation, students must purchase a personal policy and provide proof of coverage prior to beginning their rotation.
Students are responsible for their own meals. The main campus offers three options for meals.
- The Atrium Grille is open seven days a week. The hours of operation are 6:30 a.m. – 7 p.m., Monday – Friday, and 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. on weekends and holidays.
- The Towers Cafe is open 6 a.m. – 11 p.m., Monday – Friday.
- The Plaza Café is open 7 a.m. – 2 p.m., Monday – Friday. At the Old Brooklyn Campus, the café is open 7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Monday-Friday.
Medical Library and Internet Access
Internet access is available in the library. Many departments have computers available for student to use during their rotations. Internet access is also available on the computer terminals in the Graduate Medical Education lounge during weekday business hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. MetroHealth is Wi-Fi accessible.
The Harold H. Brittingham Memorial Library is located on the second floor (Room 267) of the Rammelkamp Center for Education and Research at MetroHealth Medical Center. The library hours are 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The library phone number is 216-778-5623.
Students must register at the main desk in the Library before borrowing any publications. Librarians are available to answer any questions about library services. Feel free to request a tour and/or orientation to the library. Medline, MDConsult and Up-To-Date, and a multitude of other databases are available for searches and medical information.
Medical School Evaluation Forms
It is the student's responsibility to provide the Graduate Medical Education Office with the medical school's official evaluation form and appropriate forwarding information. If available electronically, please forward to [email protected]. The evaluation form should not be given directly to your department or attending.
Students should park in the TOOMEY PARKING LOT (surface lot next to the Quad Park and highways). The fee for parking is $7.86 per week. Parking can be purchased in the Parking Office, located just outside the Towers Main entrance. Their hours are 8:00 am to 4:30 pm Monday-Friday. A VALID MH ID BADGE is required in order to purchase parking.
