Emergency Medicine Residents are immersed in a robust and mission-driven research environment that emphasizes innovation, collaboration, and meaningful impact on patient care. As a major teaching affiliate of Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, and access to resources within two hospital institutions, The MetroHealth System and Cleveland Clinic, provides access to a rich academic infrastructure and a wide network of research mentors and resources.

Scholarly activity is actively encouraged and supported through funding for conference presentations, and opportunities to present at regional and national meetings. Residents regularly contribute to peer-reviewed publications and institutional research symposia, and quality improvement projects fostering the skills necessary for careers in academic medicine, clinical practice, and leadership.

Emergency Care Research and Innovation

Cleveland has emerged as a national leader in emergency care research and innovation, driven by strong collaboration between institutions like MetroHealth Medical Center, Cleveland Clinic and Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. Together, these partners create a highly integrated academic environment where cutting-edge research is rapidly translated into frontline emergency care.

At the forefront is the Cleveland-based Emergency Care Research and Innovation (ECRI) collaborative, which advances research across key areas such as resuscitation, stroke, emergency ultrasound, informatics, simulation, and EMS systems. This work reflects the broad scope of emergency medicine, spanning prehospital care through in-hospital treatment, and emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration among physicians, researchers, and trainees.
