Pharmacy Curriculum

MetroHealth’s Department of Pharmacy has a wide range of clinical specialists covering available required and elective rotations offered onsite. Structured rotations are directed by pharmacists who specialize in the area of pharmacy that is the focus of each particular learning experience.

Rotations are listed in alphabetical order. Unless otherwise specified, all rotations are 1 month in duration. Below is a summary of rotations as well as required projects:

Longitudinal Experiences and Projects

Additionally, residents will gain experience in formulary management and medication safety rotations each over six-months. During these each half of the year, residents will participate in corresponding interdisciplinary subcommittees (formulary and medication safety subcommittees) and Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee. Residents are responsible for taking minutes during these meetings and participate in additional projects/activities as assigned.

For the required Advocacy rotation, the residents are expected to participate in monthly work sessions that will include topic discussions, letter writing, state/national updates, and project work. Each resident will participate on an advocacy or legal committee at the state level. Within the residency class we will have representation on all three state organizations: OSHP, OCCP and OPA. Involvement of these committees may travel for advocacy events within the state and/or have the opportunity to present or publish. MetroHealth will reimburse for mileage for these meetings.

Residents will gain experience in developing a new drug monograph, review and analyze medication errors, develop new protocols or processes to prevent or reduce future errors. In addition, residents will complete a formulary drug class review, monthly (or bimonthly) presentations, seminar presentation, and other rotation-specific projects.

Teaching Opportunities

An elective longitudinal teaching certificate program is available through the University of Findlay College of Pharmacy. This rotation does not count towards one of your allotted elective one-month rotations during the residency year.

In addition to the optional teaching certificate program, residents will take an active role in teaching and precepting pharmacy students on their APPE rotations both as co- and primary preceptors. MetroHealth System takes students from all colleges of pharmacy in Ohio in addition to other colleges based on requests.
