Gastroenterology Fellowship

The Gastroenterology Fellowship program is a fully accredited three-year training program with three fellows in each year of training. Our mission is to train the next generation of gastroenterologists, clinical educators, and scholars to provide compassionate, high quality, and equitable care across the health system.

A major focus of the Metrohealth system is dedicated to training clinicians, scholars, educators, and future leaders to face the future challenges in health care. Our goal parallels that of our institution where we have created an environment which fosters the development of clinical excellence, education, and scholarly activity in our trainees.

Our values mirror those of the Metrohealth System: Service to others, Teamwork, Accountability, Respect, Inclusion and Diversity, and Quest for excellence. We offer a diverse clinical experience in general gastroenterology, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), hepatology, motility, and advanced endoscopy.

The hallmark of our fellowship program includes the opportunity to work with strong faculty in a variety of disciplines, our diverse patient population, and our commitment to treat the underserved population of Northeast Ohio.

The Division of Gastroenterology/Hepatology at MetroHealth Medical Center is committed to establishing an educational environment for fellows to learn the necessary clinical skills in Gastroenterology/Hepatology.

Welcome from the Program Director

Welcome to the Gastroenterology Fellowship program at MetroHealth Medical Center, an affiliate of Case Western Reserve University.

We offer a three-year fellowship program that is fully accredited by ACGME. Our faculty has a diverse educational and clinical background, ranging from general gastroenterology to advanced endoscopy and hepatology. With the help of our faculty, you'll obtain clinical expertise in general gastroenterology, and you'll have the option to obtain additional experience in your specific area of interest.

Research is a key part of what we do at MetroHealth. Our clinicians are in the forefront of motility, hepatology, and neurogastronterology research. There are several clinical trials in progress on our campus as well, including in artificial intelligence.

As a fellow, you have the opportunity to participate in that research. Fellows conduct over six months of research, spread across their three-year training program. Our former fellows have maximized their research impact by publishing their work in peer-reviewed journals and presenting their research at leading national and international conferences.

These steps can help them to build up a professional profile before graduation, and that can translate into better job offers post-graduation.

We also focus on providing comprehensive care for people with complex GI issues. We provide a swallowing center for those with persistent swallowing issues. We offer a motility laboratory to evaluate GI function. Our program balances clinical and research time, so you will have the opportunity to work with patients in real-world surroundings.

With excellent clinical training and research opportunities, our fellows are well-prepared to enter any practice environment, be in academic medicine or private practice. Our fellows have recently matched in advanced training including transplant hepatology, advanced endoscopy, and IBD.

This program is one of the oldest in the country, and graduates from our program can be found in prestigious institutions both in the United States and abroad.

On behalf of the program, I thank you for your interest. I invite you to apply and experience firsthand what makes MetroHealth a great place to work and train. We look forward to your application.
