Welcome from Program Leadership

The Endocrinology Faculty at MetroHealth Medical Center established the fellowship in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism because we love to teach and want teaching and scholarly activity to be an important part of our professional lives. This is not a “service” fellowship. The current faculty in the division could handle the clinical needs of the hospital without the fellowship program. The fellows have plenty of time in the daily outpatient clinics (one hour for new patients, thirty minutes for follow-up patients) to evaluate their patients, present them to the attending physician, and then see the patients together with the attending for further mentoring and role-modeling.

All our physicians in the Division of Endocrinology hold teaching appointments at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. Our hospital is a tertiary referral center that serves 24 satellites in addition to the main campus, so the fellows in the outpatient clinics are exposed to a large variety of outpatient endocrine problems. The inpatient consultation service, without being so busy that it is a burden, offers extensive experience in the management of inpatient problems in endocrinology.

There is a weekly board review session, a quarterly Medical-Surgical Endocrinology Conference, and a weekly academic meeting that includes journal clubs, case discussions, questions from the Endocrinology Self-Assessment Program, guest speakers, a review of interesting or difficult scans with the radiology department, and literature reviews by the fellows. Most teaching is offered at a 1:1 or 1:2 faculty-to-fellow ratio. Extensive experience in ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration biopsy of the thyroid is provided by the Department of Radiology.

We believe that we have fashioned an outstanding training program in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism, and we invite you to look into our program more fully. Welcome to the fellowship in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism at MetroHealth Medical Center.
