Dermatology Residency

The MetroHealth Dermatology Residency Program is unique in several ways. The training program is comprised almost exclusively of resident-driven continuity clinics, in which residents follow their patients during the time of their training. This longitudinal patient-physician experience enables the resident to see the evolution of disease processes while gaining an understanding of how to manage real world chronic conditions. This continuity model holds true for the resident's surgical and dermatopathology experience.

A typical resident's week begins with seeing the patient in clinic, diagnosing the biopsy specimen under the microscope, and surgically treating the patient. In addition, Dermatology has a strong interdisciplinary relationship with Rheumatology, enhancing the educational experience of the residents in chronic illness. Training education is further strengthened by the community clinic experience, thus widening their exposure.

The MetroHealth residency program has a large committed faculty with diverse interests and expertise in various specialties, who work together to create a nurturing environment for the residents. The program flourishes due to our physicians, who are drawn and committed to a unique program that benefits from serving a diverse patient population from an underserved community. The program strives to improve the model that best preserves the tenet that our patients are vital teachers.

Application Process

The Dermatology Program offers two residency positions each year. We are now accepting applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). The deadline is November 1.

All interviews will be held virtually. The program will be following the recommendations of the Associates of Professors in Dermatology. See the recommendations here.

Interview Dates: Late January to early February

For the 2022 ERAS® cycle, our program will encourage all applicants to complete a supplemental ERAS application, offered through the AAMC’s ERAS program. Applicants also will be required to complete the MyERAS application.

The additional information will help our program staff learn more about applicants’ medical education journey, including more meaningful information about work, volunteer, and research experiences, and help us better identify applicants who fit our program environment and mission.

This supplemental ERAS application will be delivered on a survey platform outside the MyERAS application and must be completed between September 1 and September 30.

Please bookmark the supplemental ERAS application section of the AAMC website to find the latest information, FAQs, and resources.

Resident Testimonial

“We have excellent training in complex medical dermatology, dermatopathology, and surgery. The focus of our program is continuity of patient care, leading to sustained relationships with patients throughout our residency training. Additionally, the ability to treat patients of variable ethnic backgrounds allows us to become familiar in treating several skin conditions across many different skin types."
