Welcome from Program Leadership

There is a 23-year life expectancy disparity between two neighborhoods, 2 miles apart, in Northeast Ohio.

Why? 80% of what affects health happens outside the clinical setting.

Welcome to The MetroHealth System Department of Surgery at Case Western Reserve University. We have a long history of excellence in graduate surgical education and are excited to return to an independent program with an opportunity to develop new curriculum in areas such as population health, health care disparities, teamwork and communication, and provide residents with training in the full spectrum of modern surgical care.

The mission of the Department of Surgery mirrors that of the MetroHealth System itself, to lead the way to a healthier community through service, teaching, discovery and research.

We choose to work here because of our ability to provide care to all in our community, regardless of their circumstances, and for the opportunity to teach and train surgeons to become expert clinicians with the skills to be leaders in health care regardless of their practice environment.

The System has a Level 1 Trauma Center and the regional Burn Center and is the final phases of a $1 billion campus transformation which includes a new inpatient tower where you will be delivering care in a state of the art facility. This reflects the degree of investment that Metro has in the care of our patients and in the education of our residents.

I am very proud of the quality and dedication of our faculty and their interest and ability to teach. The faculty are active in numerous surgical organizations and academic societies and many hold, or have held, important leadership positions in academic surgery.

We will provide you outstanding education in an environment of respect for you as a valued colleague, with a true interest in your growth and development as a physician. We offer many opportunities for clinical and basic science research and support residents in presenting their work at regional and national meetings.

Along with our endowed visiting professorships in surgical education, endocrine surgery, surgical oncology, trauma, plastic surgery and ophthalmology, you will have significant interaction with leaders of surgery from throughout the country.

Thank you for your interest in our residency program. MetroHealth is a special place. This is where you can achieve your goals.
