How to Apply

The MetroHealth Surgery Program will be participating in the 2024 NRMP Match to fill 3 categorical PGY1 positions and 3 preliminary PGY1 positions. All interested applicants can submit applications through the ERAS system. We will not accept or review application materials sent directly to the program.

Application Requirements

Our program uses a holistic application review process and each of the items listed below are reviewed by our selection committee.  We are looking for future physician leaders from diverse backgrounds that align with our program mission and aims.

  • Medical School Transcript
  • Dean’s Letter/MSPE
  • CV
  • Personal statement
  • Three Letters of Recommendation
    • Preferred: letters from surgeons
  • USMLE Step Exam Scores:
    • Step 1: Pass on the first attempt
    • Step 2: There is no minimum score to be interviewed but must be received by application deadline.
    • COMLEX Scores will not be accepted in lieu of USMLE Step Scores
  • ECFMG certification:
    • IMG and FMG applicants must be ECFMG eligible, and certification obtained upon medical school graduation. H-1B and J-1 visa sponsorship is on a case-by-case basis.
  • No more than three years between medical school graduation and beginning a US ACGME accredited residency

Interviews and Deadlines

Applications submitted by review dates will be given priority, but applicants have until the deadlines below to ensure all materials are submitted through ERAS.

All interviews will be virtual. We will only send as many invitations as interview spots. Applicants will have at least 48 hours to respond.

We hope to host an in-person event for applicants to visit our program. This will be limited to those that have been invited to interview and subject to current hospital visitor policies. Ability to attend this event will not impact our ranking, as lists will be finalized before this event. Information will be shared at the time of interviews.

Categorical Applicants:

  • Application review begins Wednesday, September 27, 2023
  • Application Deadline: Friday, October 13, 2023
  • Interview invitations will be sent out by October 31, 2023
  • Interviews will take place throughout November and December

Preliminary Applicants:

  • Application review begins: Monday December 4, 2023
  • Application Deadline: Friday, December 22, 2023
  • Interview invitations will be sent out on a rolling basis during January
  • Interviews will take place in December and January
