Aims

  1. Graduate a diverse group of general surgery residents with high-volume hands-on experience from day one to gain expertise in managing all general surgical problems including those unique among low socioeconomic multi-racial and multi-ethnic patient population. 
  2. Deliver an exceptional surgical experience in general surgery well-balanced with sub-specialty experience in a wide variety of fields, so as to graduate residents competent to pursue general surgery practice or fellowship training. 
  3. Train residents in a program under the guidance and mentoring of highly regarded nationally known leaders in surgery, in an environment with high quality surgical metrics and high value healthcare.  
  4. Provide experiential learning in identifying patient safety vulnerabilities and developing competence to institute sustainable system changes. 
  5. Graduate general surgery residents with skills at objectively evaluating the latest research literature in an evidence-based format and translating this research evidence into clinical practice. 
  6. Train with an academically highly productive faculty, and leaders in quality improvement and patient safety.
  7. Maintain a high level of wellness among residents through education, support systems, monitoring of burnout and utilization of existing wellness activities.
