Surgery Residency
The MetroHealth System is the oldest health care system in Northeast Ohio, dating back to 1837. Our academic affiliation with Case Western Reserve University began in 1914. The Department of Surgery at MetroHealth has a long-standing commitment to excellence in surgical education with a 68-year history of training surgery residents.
With our recent ACGME accreditation, we are returning to our roots as an independent residency program and joining 46 other GME programs in the system. Our program prepares excellent surgeons capable of functioning in a general surgery practice setting, well poised to pursue further training, and ready to take on leadership roles in the field.
As an academic medical center in partnership with Case Western Reserve University, as well as a safety net hospital, residents learn in a unique, enriching, and diverse environment. Our faculty and staff are dedicated to the holistic education of residents in a variety of learning modalities, while also supporting our learners as individuals.
The Surgery Residency Program is dedicated to MetroHealth's mission of providing the highest quality care to its patients and serving as a safety net hospital for all members of our community. MetroHealth is strongly invested in the success of this program. To help build the program and attain the most qualified resident candidates during its first few years of operation, MetroHealth is prepared to offer significant financial incentive bonuses for categorical residents who join (at least $10k in the first year of training).
The incentive bonuses will be spread throughout the program when residents meet predetermined requirements, including but not limited to remaining in good standing and timely progression through the program.
Recognizing the extraordinarily high debt burden for many medical school graduates, these funds are intended to provide assistance for loan repayment and other expenses while residents are participating in the program and to encourage prospective residents to consider the benefits of joining a newly established residency program rooted in providing innovative, high-level community-based care.
This unique training opportunity, coupled with the incentive bonuses, will give residents the skills and financial freedom to practice, educate, and lead in underserved communities throughout the nation. Additional details regarding the incentive bonuses will be available once individuals have been invited to interview.
