Surgery Residency

The MetroHealth System is the oldest health care system in Northeast Ohio, dating back to 1837. Our academic affiliation with Case Western Reserve University began in 1914. The Department of Surgery at MetroHealth has a long-standing commitment to excellence in surgical education with more than a 70-year history of training surgery residents.

As an academic medical center in partnership with Case Western Reserve University, as well as a safety net hospital, residents learn in a unique, enriching, and diverse environment. Our Level I Trauma Center and Comprehensive Burn Center add additional opportunities for residents see patients of all acuities, complex cases, and care for critically ill patients. Residents also benefit from educational experiences at the Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and Akron Children’s Hospital, and our satellite surgery centers. Please review our curriculum page for more information.

Our faculty and staff are dedicated to the holistic education of residents in a variety of learning modalities, while also supporting our learners as individuals. Our program prepares excellent surgeons capable of functioning in a general surgery practice setting, well poised to pursue further training, and ready to take on leadership roles in the field.

The Surgery Residency Program is dedicated to MetroHealth's mission of providing the highest quality care to its patients and serving as a safety net hospital for all members of our community. In turn, MetroHealth is strongly invested in the success of this program and provides educational resources for our residents including TrueLearn, SCORE, Loupes, financial support for presentations, as well as an additional education funds.

This unique training opportunity will give residents the skills and experience to practice, educate, and lead in underserved communities and beyond. Join us at MetroHealth and see how far you’ll go!
