About Our Program
PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives.
Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.

Previous residents of the PGY1 Program obtained PGY2 positions in various specialties. Please look at Our Alumni page for more specifics. Furthermore, residents fulfill their career goals by acquiring positions as clinical pharmacy specialists and pharmacists within the MetroHealth System, the greater Cleveland area, and nationwide. Our residents train under qualified, experienced preceptors who prepare them for a career in pharmacy practice.
We offer four PGY1 pharmacy residency positions and two PGY2 ambulatory care residency positions each year. For our PGY1 program, we have two residents in our inpatient track and two residents in our ambulatory care track. Both tracks will complete the same core required rotations.
All residents are then able to further customize their learning experience within each track through the elective rotations, research project, and drug use evaluation to further explore areas of interest. There will be two different numbers for the match depending on area of interest.
View the curriculum and learn more about how to apply.
PGY1 Pharmacy Residents will have rotations at MetroHealth Medical Center (Main Campus), as well as at other MetroHealth locations.
Purpose of MetroHealth PGY1 Residency: PGY1 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.
