Radiology Residency

Our training program offers a unique blend of academic medicine and immersive clinical experience, all set in a collegiate practice environment focused on resident education.

Thank you for your interest in the Diagnostic Radiology residency program at Case Western Reserve University | MetroHealth Medical Center. Our training program offers a unique blend of academic medicine and immersive clinical experience, all set in a collegiate practice environment focused on resident education.

MetroHealth residents are trained in Cleveland’s largest and longest operating Level 1 Trauma Center. The program excels in providing a balanced education in inpatient and outpatient radiology with graded residency responsibilities throughout four years of training.

We serve a diverse patient population with expanding catchment areas throughout greater Cleveland. Our emphasis is on the development of outstanding clinical Radiologists and future practice leaders in academic and private practice settings.

As a medium-sized training program, offering 5 Diagnostic Radiology training positions per year, our residents benefit from working 1-on-1 with a growing group of over 30 subspecialty trained faculty.

We provide daily afternoon didactics, Grand Rounds discussions, and several interdepartmental conferences with top healthcare professionals across medicine and surgery. Highlights of our didactic program include case-based learning, professional development, radiology economics, healthcare ethics, and artificial intelligence.

Our subspecialty trained faculty have academic appointments at Case Western Reserve University and provide our residents with outstanding hands-on diagnostic and interventional training and a comprehensive curriculum in Radiologic physics.

In collaboration with the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, our residency training program also offers an Early Specialization in Interventional Radiology (ESIR) pathway as well as combined Interventional Radiology/Diagnostic Radiology (IR/DR) residency.

Residents, faculty, and recent graduates hold distinguished positions in state and national radiological societies including the Ohio Radiological Society, American College of Radiology, American Board of Radiology, and Society of Interventional Radiology.

Outside of the practice environment, our Radiology family includes outdoor enthusiasts, pilots, athletes, musicians, and world travelers.

MetroHealth recently began a transformation project highlighted by the construction of a new Main Campus hospital which will house the radiology department, beginning in 2023. The project emphasizes MetroHealth’s commitment to green spaces, community programs, employee wellness, and world-class healthcare.

Here is a video montage of defining moments from our residency:

Aims

  1. Graduate excellent clinicians competent in general diagnostic imaging, radiology physics, and interventional radiology techniques, and prepare residents for sub-specialty fellowship training and radiology board exams.
  2. Emphasize clinically integrated professional education.
  3. Develop physician educators who are committed to life-long learning, continuous quality improvement, and the well-being of the health-care team.
  4. Advance resident education from evidence-based medicine to intelligence-based medicine including the use of radiology technology to focus on population health and cost-effective imaging utilization.

Salary and Benefits

Salary: Resident salary depends on your post-graduate year. Please see GME > Salary and Benefits.

Education Funds: MetroHealth Radiology residents are each provided dedicated Education Funds to use for conference attendance or the purchase of educational materials throughout their residency training. Frequently Asked Questions

We conduct a holistic review process in which we consider all aspects of the candidate’s application. As part of this process, we do not require a minimum USMLE Step score.

However, since performance on standardized tests are an important component of becoming a successful Radiologist, we prioritize candidates who have passed USMLE STEP I and STEP II (CS and CK) on their first attempt.

Monday through Friday call coverage consists of a nightly short call evening shift and separate weekly overnight night float.

Residents in their second, third, and fourth years participate in the call pool. Night Float begins at 10 p.m. and concludes at 8 m, and residents on-call are free from daytime responsibilities during night float weeks.

Residents average approximately 11 weeks total of night float over the course of residency.

Evening call is assigned one week at a time and the resident provides coverage from 5 p.m. -2 a.m.

Weekend call coverage consists of four 12-hour blocks, assigned on a rotating basis.

There are no independent call responsibilities during the first year of residency training. First year residents receive extensive training to prepare for independent call the following year through introductory didactic lectures.

We encourage all qualified applicants to apply, regardless of year of graduation from medical school.

We have had numerous residents that have excelled coming from other specialties. However, large gaps in your medical training are problematic.

Do you accept applications from foreign medical graduates.

We accept applications from all qualified US and International graduates.

We sponsor both J1 and H1B visas.
