Program Overview
Academic Setting
The MetroHealth System Obesity Medicine Fellowship aims to provide a unique and rigorous clinical experience in obesity medicine based in the Internal Medicine Program at MetroHealth, which is a major affiliate of Case Western University School of Medicine.
Obesity Medicine Training
The training spans one academic year and includes clinical rotations in adult obesity medicine, pediatric obesity medicine, and related subspecialties, including bariatric surgery, sleep medicine, endocrinology, hepatology and cardiology.
Fellows will develop proficiency in all aspects of weight management including lifestyle and behavioral therapy, pharmacotherapy, treatment of related medical comorbidities, and pre-operative and post-operative management of patients undergoing bariatric surgery. Fellows also complete a faculty-taught Obesity Medicine curriculum during their year.
Population Health, Quality Improvement Training, and Leadership
In addition to clinical exposure and education in Obesity Medicine, fellows will participate in a distance learning program with other providers that is based at MetroHealth. In this interactive program, participants learn and use knowledge and skills in:
- Quality improvement
- Population health
- Leadership skills and professional development
- Addressing the social determinants of health
Scholarship and Learning Opportunities
Participants develop, complete, and share with their colleagues a complete a faculty-mentored academic project in quality improvement and/or population health.
Fellows will have the opportunity to attend at least one national conference of a society focused on obesity medicine and will be strongly encouraged to submit work for peer-reviewed presentation.
Fellows are expected to take the American Board of Obesity Medicine Exam during or at the completion their fellowship. Faculty mentorship will focus on assisting fellows with career planning and advancement of academic and professional goals.
