Recreation:

We have an extensive parks system with over 300 miles of walking/hiking trails, 18 public recreation and camping reservations, and several dog-friendly beaches. Lake Erie stretches along the northern portion of Cleveland, making swimming, boating, canoeing and kayaking widely available. Cleveland (and surrounding Northeast Ohio) features a vibrant arts and culture presence that includes museums, theatre and performing arts, restaurants, and numerous other attractions that cater to a variety of interests.

Housing:

Cleveland is one of the most affordable mid-sized cities in the U.S. Many residents live just minutes from the hospital, either in downtown Cleveland or any of its nearby suburbs such as Ohio City, Tremont, Cleveland Heights, Lakewood, or Shaker Heights. Apartments and houses are typically very affordable for residents, and some residents choose to purchase a home.

Our CME department offers many resources to residents, including free private and confidential mental health counseling, career development help, access to the Case Western Reserve University Gym, a meal allowance, an educational stipend, and health, dental, vision and malpractice insurance. Our GME office has an open-door policy for any questions or concerns.

Yes, MetroHealth is affiliated with Case Western Reserve University and serves as one of its major teaching hospitals for medical students. MetroHealth also has close relationships with both the Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals systems, serving as a training site for medical students, residents, and fellows. In addition to training nearly 400 MetroHealth residents and fellows annually, MetroHealth helps train more than 1,000 medical students and other medical professionals, and hosts 600+ visiting residents/fellows each year.

Our neurology department was founded in the 1960’s by the legendary neurologist Maurice Victor, who wrote one of the most highly regarded neurology textbooks, Principles of Neurology with Dr. Raymond Adams, a textbook that remains popular today, now in its 12th edition. He was also a prominent researcher and discoverer of the neurological effects of alcohol and the diagnosis of Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome.
