Emergency Medicine Ultrasound

Comprehensive point-of-care ultrasound education for medical students, residents, fellows and physician faculty

Welcome! Thank you for your interest in Emergency Ultrasound at the MetroHealth System.

About MetroHealth

MetroHealth is an academic medical center that has served the city of Cleveland and Cuyahoga County for over 175 years. We offer comprehensive point-of-care ultrasound education for medical students, residents, fellows and physician faculty.

Program Mission

Our mission is to promote the use of bedside ultrasound through program development, education and research. Throughout our educational programs we seeks to prepare future leaders in emergency ultrasound through the development of academic, clinical and administrative skills in emergency ultrasound.

Facilities

We have state-of-the-art machines both at our main campus as well as at our satellite emergency departments with the ability to perform general 2D ultrasound, advanced ECHO, endocavitary ultrasound and TEE.

Our simulation center has a variety of phantom trainers as well as a computerized ultrasound simulator capable of supporting our clinical capabilities.

We welcome you to learn about our ultrasound programs and train with us.

About our Program

Medical School Education

We are involved in teaching medical students at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in the use of emergency ultrasound. The students learn ultrasound that correlates with their anatomy and physiology courses during M1 year. Students also have the opportunity to participate in an elective in emergency ultrasound in the ED.

Resident Education

We have a longitudinal curriculum focusing on teaching residents how to use emergency ultrasound at the beside. This starts with a 1 day course in the first month of intern year. Residents spend 1 month in their first year with a dedicated ultrasound block. Residents have ample opportunity to scan on shift throughout their training. Often 3rd year residents complete a 1 week elective in ultrasound.

Fellowship

We offer a 1 year fellowship in emergency ultrasound for those who want further training in ultrasound, want to manage an ultrasound program or want to pursue a career in academic medicine.

Continuing Education

We provide continuing ultrasound education through our bi-monthly ultrasound lecture series. In this series we discuss topics in emergency ultrasound both at the basic and advanced levels. Additionally we incorporate speakers from other departments that utilize point-of-care ultrasound.

Regional and National Reach

Our faculty are acclaimed leaders in Point-of-Care Ultrasound and continue to be involved in regional and national organization through leadership and educational roles. Involvement has included ACEP ultrasound section, Great Lakes Ultrasound Consortium and Ohio ACEP.

Our Resources

Machines and Probes

Philips Sparq
All of our emergency departments are equipped with one or more Philips Sparq machines. This machine is equipped provide the maneuverability necessary for bedside ultrasound and the image quality necessary for appropriate diagnostic imaging. Each machine is equipped with a curvilinear, phased array and linear transducer as well the software packages that allow for advanced cardiac imaging.

Philips HD11

This machine is housed in our Main Campus Emergency Department and is used by our ED ultrasound team. It equipped with a curvilinear, phased array and linear transducer as well the software packages that allow for advanced OB, vascular and cardiac imaging.

Sonosite SII & S Cath
All of our emergency departments are equipped with a Sonosite SII or S cath machine. These machines are designed and setup to be used as dedicated and are heavily used in out ED Medic Ultrasound Guided IV program.

Standard Transducers
All of our machines used for diagnostic bedside ultrasound are equipped with a curvilinear transducer for general scanning, phase array transducer for cardiac imaging and a linear array transducer for soft tissue, lung and procedural guidance.

Other Transducers
In addition to the standard transducer we have several specialized transducers available in our ultrasound office.

  • Endocavitary transducer
  • Hockey Stick Transducer
  • Trans-Esophageal ECHO

Training Equipment

We have a variety of phantoms and simulators in the ED or simulation center that allow learners to practice diagnostic or procedural ultrasound.

The Symbionx trainer is available in our simulation center. This is an ultrasound simulator that allows the learner to practice ultrasound image acquisition and compare computer generated images with 3D anatomic models and findings from standardized cases.

Blue block phantoms and Central line phantoms allow learners to practice both peripheral as well as central ultrasound-guided venous access.

A variety of torso trainers allow learners to practice ultrasound-guided thoracentesis and paracentesis.
