Addiction Medicine Fellowship

The Addiction Medicine Fellowship is a 12-month program that offers specialized training in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and management of substance use disorders.

The Department of Emergency Medicine at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) offers a one-year ACGME-accredited fellowship in Addiction Medicine. The Addiction Medicine Fellowship is a 12-month program that offers specialized training in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and management of substance use disorders.

The Addiction Medicine fellow will rotate through a variety of practice settings including a dual diagnosis inpatient unit, an inpatient rehabilitation unit, the emergency department, the addiction consult service, and a variety of outpatient services including a justice center clinic, the Mothers and Children’s dependency clinic, and the pain management clinic.

The fellow will maintain a longitudinal clinic in our opioid use disorder clinic and our substance use disorder clinic at Recovery Resources.  

Several unique features of this fellowship include:

  • Exposure to a dual diagnosis inpatient unit and an acute rehabilitation inpatient unit
  • Case finding and treatment in the Emergency Department
  • A longitudinal clinic within a community mental health center
  • Optional electives in a methadone clinic and in the HIV clinic
  • Extensive experience in a pain management clinic
  • Exposure to patients across a range of inpatients through the consult service
  • Didactic education in conjunction with the City-wide addiction medicine grand rounds
  • Prepares the Fellow to take the American Board of Preventive Medicine Addiction Medicine Certification Examination
