The Department of Emergency Medicine at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) offers a one year ACGME accredited fellowship in Addiction Medicine. The Addiction Medicine Fellowship is a 12 month program that provides specialized training in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and management of substance use disorders.
The Addiction Medicine fellow rotates through a variety of clinical settings including a dual diagnosis inpatient unit, the addiction consult service, and multiple outpatient experiences. Outpatient rotations include Clinics in MetroHealth Recovery Services, the Motivational Engagement Clinic (walk in low threshold addiction care) the Mothers and Children’s Dependency Clinic, the Pain Management Clinic, and the Cuyahoga County Corrections Addiction Rotation.
Fellows also participate in a dual diagnosis outpatient clinic and a longitudinal clinical experience in MetroHealth recovery services where they provide ongoing care to the same cohort of patients throughout the year.
Several unique features of this fellowship include:
- Exposure to a dual diagnosis inpatient unit and an acute rehabilitation inpatient unit
- Case finding and treatment in the Emergency Department
- A longitudinal clinic within a community mental health center
- Optional electives in a methadone clinic and in the HIV clinic
- Extensive experience in a pain management clinic
- Exposure to patients across a range of inpatients through the consult service
- Didactic education in conjunction with the City-wide addiction medicine grand rounds
- Prepares the Fellow to take the American Board of Preventive Medicine Addiction Medicine Certification Examination
